Rethinking Tourism in Selangor to Strategically Develop Local
Industry
SELANGOR, 27 September 2022 – The Selangor State Government, through the Official Tourism Promotion Agency, Tourism Selangor, is once again celebrating World Tourism Day 2022 with the theme Rethinking Tourism. This year's celebration of World Tourism Day, as announced by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), will center on re-imagining the sector’s growth in size and relevance.
Over the course of more than two years, the worldwide
tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience in the face of the unforeseen
difficulties posed by the Covid-19 outbreak. Now that the world's economies are
beginning to recover, the travel sector needs to move swiftly to redevelop and
jumpstart the recovery and growth throughout the transition to the endemic.
The State of Selangor has been steadfast in aiding
the nation's economic revival in accordance with the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development Goal by formulating and enforcing policies that boost
sustainable tourism that, creates jobs and promotes local culture and products.
This aligns with UNWTO's mission for World Tourism Day 2022, to prioritise
people and the planet by uniting governments, businesses, and communities
around a common goal of making the tourism industry more sustainable,
inclusive, and resilient.
The state
government has designated RM 114.6 million from 2021 to 2025 for a number of
economic stimulus initiatives involving various industries as part of its
efforts to revive the economy. The Selangor Maritime Gateway, Kita Selangor,
tourism grants, and the Go Selangor mobile app are just a few of the state
government's measures that have been put into place to boost the state's
tourism industry. As a result, Selangor saw an increase in the number of
domestic visitors, and as of 2021, the state had the greatest number of
domestic visitors—10.2 million. This has demonstrated the sizable demand for
Selangor's appealing tourism products in the sector.
According to Mr. Azrul Shah bin Mohamad, the Chief
Executive Officer of Tourism Selangor, The Selangor State Government has implemented
the Selangor Economic Stimulus to increase domestic tourism to the state
through Kita Selangor 2.0. A total of RM 2.5 Million was utilised for the
One-off Financial Aid to the tourism association, Tourism Digitalisation
Learning Training Programme, Tourism Vouchers and Financial Assistance Grant.
Tourism Selangor has maintained its prominence by teaming up with
industry leaders with insider knowledge of cutting-edge business methods and
promising new developments. The agency has spearheaded numerous domestic and
international promotional initiatives, including the MATTA Fair, the Pusing
Selangor Dulu Tour, the Malaysia Health Expo 2022 in Indonesia, and sales
missions to Russia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan, as well as high-profile
events like the Tourism Selangor Golf Tournament. This contributed to the niche
market for medical tourism and cruise together with the Resort World Cruise.
Tourism Selangor aims to ramp up various Digital and Online promotions to increase awareness towards the domestic and international campaigns of Pusing Selangor Dulu and Splendid Selangor- Take Me Anywhere, in line with the Industrial Revolution 4.0 for more sustainable development and moving along with the 2022 World Tourism Day theme, in reimagining tourism as a pillar of sustainable development.
