Wisdom teeth removal - A hell of a time!

That puffy cheek
Finally, I'm back and alive and I'm so grateful for that!
I've gone through a very rough week of recovering from my wisdom teeth removal. This is one of the worst experience I had in my life and let me tell ya, if you don't have any wisdom tooth, or if they are not impacted, lucky you!

This is my first time getting my wisdom teeth removed! It hurts so much. I have three impacted wisdom teeth. Yes, three😔. There are all healthy, but, in the wrong position. Whyyyy. So, these three naughty fellas came out not in a normal position like it should, caused me pain now and then. For long term, it will harm my other teeth and gums, which will cause more painnn and problemss. Thus, I was advised by several dentists to remove them as soon as possible.

The first pain I had with one of my lower left wisdom tooth was for two weeks, I had a high fever, my head hurts and my whole body felt weak. I was so in pain. I decided to go to the government hospital since the private clinic charges me around RM 1500 and can be more for one tooth and I have three, so, I skip and find other alternatives, the government hospital. Since my husband had a good experience with a government hospital for his wisdom teeth removal, so I persist and try my luck, but in a different hospital.

Based on my experience, our government hospital does give good service, but you as a patient need to be extremely patient. You need to come early, wait for long hours, get an appointment, come back another date again, check-up, come back another date again, surgery (these may vary from person to person, cases to cases). But they are good! And guess what, it only cost me less than RM 100! Thank you and God bless. :)

All this took me 3 months for my case from the first day I make my appointment and 3 times inclusive of the surgery day. The 2 weeks of pain have absolutely gone before my surgery and I entered the operation room with no pain, but fear, compared to my husband during his removal, he was so in pain and he was so relieved when they extract his tooth, lucky him. Mine was the opposite. I was so stress knowing that it would be a scary procedure and a hell of recovery and I can't think straight 2 weeks before the surgery.

The surgery day, I tried my best to think as positive as I could by not thinking at all haha but, God, luckily my pretty oral surgeon, Dr. Ding at Shah Alam Government Hospital was an angel. She briefed me the procedure nicely and calm me down. My husband had to wait outside and all I think was to see him as fast as I could. So the procedure began. To not feel the pain while she removes my tooth, she sedated me and that makes me numb after a few minutes and the procedure began. The sedation was already painful. Three sedation, the third one was oouch!

Then, I just closed my eyes because it was nerve-wracking to look at her with all the tools. I can listen when she does everything but I can't feel anything which is good. But gosh. She cut my gum and God knows what else (You may watch the video I shared at the end of my sharing below. The video is not mine, but something like that. The video is extreme. Only watch if you have a strong heart okay). It was so hard for her to pull my tooth. She even changes the tool because the normal one couldn't pull my tooth out. Definitely a stubborn tooth. I just want it to be over as soon as I can recall.

After she managed to pull out the lower one, she numbs the upper tooth and pulls it out. The upper is not as stubborn as the lower one though. The lower one was a complete nightmare. My lower gum got stitched and phewww, done surgery. When I thought the nightmare finally over, unfortunately, the nightmare continues, not 2-3 days for normal circumstances, but mine was 7 days!

So, I had the worst 4 days and I actually lose 4 Kgs in 4 days. I was lying on the bed, I couldn't do anything much. I can't talk, I can't eat. I just need to close my eyes and wish I don't wake up because I was in extreme pain. My gum is swollen badly, which causes my left cheek to swell like a balloon. I looked bad, I felt bad. I can barely talk. I also ran to the bathroom often to change my cotton wool that I need to bite because my gum kept on bleeding like I'm having a period in my mouth lol. It was really uncomfortable and I was so quiet and so not the cheerful Sofia.

The medication that I was on really made me sick plus with the after effect of the surgery. Sadly, the painkiller causes me nausea, drowsy and feel like dying or just literally make me don't want to wake up forever. The medication also makes all the food taste and smell awful. On the third day, which I thought I should be better, but the opposite happened, I had to rush to a clinic and met with this helpful and good doctor, Dr. Nair from Qualitas, Shah Alam. After looking at how bad was my condition and understanding the circumstances, he prescribed me with a different medication and painkiller. I took his advice and replace the medication due to the infection that occurred because my swelling didn't subside.

After taking the new antibiotics, God bless, I start to recover slowly. I was too afraid to take the painkiller, although I know it is not the same type. I rather dwell with oral pain, although I have a hard time sleeping. I only have the appetite to start eating on the fifth day and I was really hungry, and I know that time I shall gain that 4 kg back easily lol. I'm glad my husband was there to support and look after me. Thank you for your care. Thank you to those who wish me recovery too and pray for me well. ❤

On the 8th day, I got my gum unstitched. Dr. Ding said it will take about 4-6 weeks for the wounds to be completely healed. Even until now, I can feel my left cheek is beating and the pain causes me a headache now and then. I'm better now than 7 days ago, but this is definitely one of the painful experiences I had in my life. I wish I don't have to repeat it again, but I know I have to do it again one day for my right wisdom tooth arghhhh. Wish me great luck..

I wish you the best if you are having your wisdom tooth removal soon! If you had your wisdom tooth removed, do share your experience in the comment. Would love to read them. I hope my experience will help you to be more prepared rather than making you more worry. Everyone does have different experiences, so don't worry much k. Have your support system, be positive and be strong. Facing pain in life also teaches you to be more grateful in appreciating life and health. Do what is important for you, your health and your life. You can do this. We can do this. 😊🙏💪

Luv,
Sofia

  1. It's wonderful personal narrative. As it is exceptionally detail oriented..write up...I felt.. a touch of literary aura...and little..dramatization could transform it into a nice short story. It's simply awesome. I love it.

  22. Is it possible to fall unconscious after the sedation because I'm worried that I might panic during the procedure and mine is grown inwards on my jawbone. So, I prefer going unconscious

    1. There is a possibility and please talk to your doctor for their advise which is best for your condition and also understand the risk if you decide to go unconscious. In my case I was awake during the procedure, felt numb after they sedated me, I could hear and see all the procedures. My procedure lasted about 3o minutes. It is nerve wrecking, but in my case I had to get it done. The pain is not during the procedure, but after and during recovery process. I hope your procedure goes well. Wish you all the best and try your best to stay calm and think positive as you can. Close your eyes and think of nice things during the procedure if possible. Take care!

  27. At least five to six glasses of drinks should be consumed every day. Avoid using straws because the motion of sucking might disturb the blood clot that has formed around the surgery site. We advise consuming soft foods high in protein and calories. Don't try to skip meals. If you keep eating, you'll feel better, be stronger, have less discomfort, and heal more quickly.
