All-Year Winter Experience in Malaysia - Ice Skate!

Me at The Royal Ice Skating Rink

When it comes to winter or cold weather, all you think about is hot chocolate, food and ice skating!

The best part of living in Malaysia is that you can find all of these in one place. Although we don’t have winter here, we have 3 indoor ice skating rinks in Malaysia which give you an all-year winter experience! These 3 ice skating rinks are:

❅Sunway Pyramid Ice
The Royal Ice Skating Rink, The Royal Chulan
❅Icescape Ice Rink, IOI City Mall Putrajaya

If you follow me, you would know how much I love food. But this time I want to share something that perhaps only a few who know me well will know that I used to ice skate seriously. I guess if I had continued my ice skating journey, I would have probably been a professional figure skater and coach now. But yeah, I still can teach you if you want to learn to ice skate, just let me know if you are interested.

I used to skate seriously at Sunway Pyramid Ice. I was a student back then. I started ice skating when I was 8 years old, I stopped skating at 13 years old after I lost someone that I love the most. I used to join Skate Malaysia and Skate Asia and won a few medals including a gold medal in one of the categories in which I participated in Skate Asia.

Figure skating, freestyle, ice dancing, footwork, and speed skating are the categories that I used to participate in the competitions. Ice skating is not easy, it involves hard work, dedication, passion, and money. If you are fine with feeling cold, under pressure, and brave, then this would be a good sport for you to consider. I will share more of my experiences in the next article to come.

If you want to enjoy ice skate, these 3 places are the most recommended places for you to go. The Royal Ice Skating Rink is quite private and small. If you want to skate without the crowd watching you, this is the place for you. It is located in a hotel and the ambiance is a bit different than the two famous rinks. Sunway Pyramid Ice is literally where I grew up, skating.

My first-time ice skating was when I was 5 years old, simply skating like a penguin. Every time I see a little girl skate, it reminds me of myself when I was small – just like a penguin. :P Sunway ice rink is awesome. They host many national and international competitions there. Many international coaches are also available for workshops and training if you would like to enroll.

The best part is you can find almost everything at Sunway Pyramid. Delectable food and drinks, entertainment, shopping, name it. It is the best mall in Malaysia and is also recognized as the biggest shopping mall in Malaysia. You should try at least once in your lifetime to skate in Sunway Pyramid-for the fun of it. :D

Icescape Ice Rink Putrajaya has an Olympic-sized rink which the Malaysia Book of Records officially awarded its indoor ice skating rink the Biggest Ice Rink in Malaysia! Just like Sunway Pyramid, you can find most of the things here as the rink is located inside the IOI City Mall, Putrajaya.

I have tried all three places and I recommend for you guys try all and let me know which one you love the most. Did you know that there was an ice skating rink in Mines Wonderland Seri Kembangan, back in 2003 but now it was closed? I loved to skate there as well as it was private and big.

Ice skating is a fun sport and if you just want to play with your friends, it is a leisure one plus fun at the same time. The best time for me to ice skate is just right after they resurface the ice when it is wet, clean, and smooth. That’s the best time for me, besides coming at a non-peak season and weekdays.

You can also come on weekends in the morning where there is a lesser crowd and you can at least enjoy skating around with less tendency of bumping into other skaters. Wanna skate freely? Weekdays, in the morning.

Right after ice skate, go grab some delicious food, dessert, and hot chocolate. It feels good. Just a friendly reminder, no matter how thrilled you guys are when you skate with your friends, don’t push and don't skate in the wrong direction.

Ice skating is a dangerous sport. If someone hits you hard or you fall in the wrong way, you might face a bad accident and we don’t want that to happen. The ice is solid as the rock and the ice skate blade is sharp as a knife.

Always stay alert and be careful at all times. Care for each other while you have fun. Help each other when someone falls on their knees and doesn’t know how to stand back up, instead of laughing out loud. Many bad incidents can happen, just be vigilant.

If you guys want to ice skate and need someone to coach you guys the basics, just buzz me. Enjoy your ice skating moments!! :D
